Frequently Asked Questions
How much do you charge?
I charge $55 for an 8 week session. I also require finger cymbals (commonly called zills). You can bring your own, or buy a set for $20 when you sign up.
Can I sit in on a class - or try one - for free?
That's really better asked as 2 questions:
1:"Can I sit in on a class?" And 2:"Can I try a class for free?" so that's how I'll answer.
•Can I observe a class?
While observers can come in any week after #4 for free, I recommend viewing week #8. I teach in 8 week sessions, and on the 8th week of each session my advanced students and I will dance solos for the class. This will let you see my teaching style in the beginner class as well as my own dance style.
•Can I just try one class?
Sorry, but no.
In spite of how it may appear, it's not because I'm an avaricious money-grubber--or at least that's not the only reason. If you've read my Biography linked off of the main page, you may remember where I said:
...my first eight-week session was miserable. I was lost through most of it. I was sure I was the only one there who just couldn’t get it. It was only after week #6 that I didn’t come home almost in tears. If it hadn’t been for the fact that I was a poor starving college student and $60 was hard for me to afford, I would never have finished my first session, but I was determined to get every week I had paid for. What I've found, is my experience wasn't unique. Even though I teach with a more relaxed style than I was taught, some people feel overwhelmed by all of the information presented in the first class or two, and simply won't come back if they have no financial investment in the remainder of the session (let's not get into a discussion of 'sunk cost' here). Because of this, I have adopted a firm policy of requiring all students in the beginning class to pay for the full session in advance.
What day and time are your classes?
I teach every Monday and Wednesday, beginner class 6:30-7:30 and intermediates 7:30-8:30pm on Wednesday. I also host an informal drum session on Mondays 7:30-8:30pm. Sometimes I teach a beginner class Saturdays 1:00-2:00pm. It is best to contact me about the Saturday class, as it is not always going. I also teach a class at the MSU college of technology--consult the course catalog for dates and times on that one.
What do I wear to class?
Anything comfortable. I suggest loose skirts and tighter tank tops or tee shirts. Bare foot is best, but sandals with little traction are ok. You can even wear socks if you are careful
